Meinong is one of Taiwan's best-preserved Hakka settlements. The Meinong Hakka Cultural Museum systematically presents the history of Hakka migration to Meinong, traditional agricultural culture, and the distinctive craft of oil-paper umbrella making. The Hakka compound courtyard (huofang) reproduced in the plaza outside the museum turns the space itself into an exhibit — an unmissable destination for gaining a deep understanding of Taiwan's Hakka culture.
Highlights of Meinong Hakka Cultural Museum
Meinong's Hakka ancestors came largely from Meixian in Guangdong, settling along the eastern bank of the Gaoping River during the Qing dynasty and forming a close-knit Hakka community. The museum displays the history of Hakka pioneer settlement, the huofang (three-sided courtyard) architectural layout and household objects, and a complete exhibition on the history of Meinong's tobacco-leaf agriculture — Meinong was once a major tobacco-growing area in Taiwan, and the memory of that agricultural era still lives in the rural landscape.
The Meinong oil-paper umbrella is one of Taiwan's well-known traditional crafts. The museum has a demonstration area where visitors can learn the complete production process from bamboo-rib cutting and paper mounting to hand-painting. The huofang courtyard reproduction outside lets visitors actually experience the spatial logic and living philosophy of a Hakka ancestral compound. Meinong Old Street also retains traditional Hakka shophouse architecture, pleasant for an after-meal stroll.
