Built in the 19th year of the Jiaqing reign (1814), Fengyi Academy is Taiwan's largest surviving Qing-dynasty academy in terms of both scale and preservation. It is a National Historic Monument. Its main hall, side chambers, and overall spatial layout have remained essentially intact, bearing witness to the concrete form of literati education in Qing-dynasty Taiwan. Together with the nearby ruins of the Qing-dynasty Fengshan County Old City, it constitutes a key historical site in Taiwan.
Highlights of Fengyi Academy
The academy was established during the Jiaqing period as a government-funded educational institution for scholars in Fengshan County preparing for the imperial civil service examinations. The building follows a three-sided courtyard (sanheyuan) plan: the main hall is dedicated to Confucius, and the side chambers served as classrooms. The layout is orderly and hierarchical. Finely carved timber elements — bracket sets (dougong) and door lintels — reflect the technical level of Qing-dynasty craftsmen in Taiwan.
The restored Fengyi Academy now serves as a cultural exhibition space, displaying materials on the Qing-dynasty imperial examination system, academy education, and the development history of the Fengshan area. Nearby Qing-dynasty Fengshan County Old City remnants — including the Caogong Canal and old moat — can be connected by foot, offering a complete experience of the historical spatial layers of Qing-dynasty Fengshan County governance. It is an important site for studying southern Taiwan's administrative history under the Qing.
